About 2000 vinyl albums are stashed in a corner behind twin turntables, and a collection of band posters papers one wall of this music-focused cafe. As the sounds of the Fun Loving Criminals drift out Piccolo Espresso’s door, a couple of lecturers from nearby Swinburne University stroll in. The efficient barista swiftly conjures their order from the much-loved La San Marco machine. He’s used to being asked for a piccolo espresso or cafe latte and will happily comply. Just the same, standard cafe lattes are rich, sweet and caramelly, the perfect pre-lecture eye-opener, and the clean, balanced espressos are all citrussy tang. Piccolo’s polished team dispenses 25kg of Coffee Supreme beans a week to sustain students, teachers and local office workers with a penchant for good music and fine coffee.
