In the Carlisle Street battle for supremacy, only the strong survive, and Midali’s deliberate focus on quality espresso has ensured its place. The narrow bolthole, liberally dressed in red, is so squeezy that most customers elbow in, grab their quality espresso and exit fast. Not that lingering is discouraged – there’s a big screen at the rear for those who appreciate watching the extraction process. Owners Michael Spektor and David Barouche are often found pulling the house-blend Rio coffees from the Wega machine – and enjoying a chat with regulars. The espressos are packed with body and a surprising honey-like sweetness. Although the base seems too good for milk, Midali caffe lattes pack a pleasant punch and the natural sweetness is not lost to the delicate microfoam.
