A weekend visit to Apte requires perfect timing – or patience as you form an orderly queue behind pram-pushing yummy mummies, lycra lads and Green-voting retirees coveting seats in the pretty garden courtyard or the interior communal tables. The name’s an acronym for A Place to Eat but week-round it’s the shiny, ever-busy Synesso Cyncra machine that powers this sunlit corner cafe. Five Senses provides Apte’s three blends: a rich, dark custom mix for milk-based coffee, another for espresso and a Fairtrade decaf for those so inclined. Try a tangy macchiato with a chocolate aftertaste, or a gossamer-textured caffe latte. Given the cafe’s name, you’re obliged to consider a generously filled pide, an eggy brunch or calorific chocolate-cheesecake brownie to accompany your cup of joe.
