Turkish shisha pipes in the front window and groups of older men savouring coffee create the initial impression of a gentleman’s club. But computer terminals along one wall tell another story. Modern and clean with grey-tiled floors, splashes of orange and neat timber tables, Cafe 3Four2 caters to a broad demographic at the quiet end of Flinders Street, near King Street. Long-stay newspaper readers and uni students sustain themselves on all-day breakfasts or filled focaccias and muffins from the display case, washed down with coffee. Owner-barista Serhan Ogutuou presides over the espresso machine with hearty friendliness. His coffee menu features a house specialty, the Oslo. It’s a hybrid caffe latte/cappuccino with a well-extracted base and smoothly textured milk. Nutty, malty flavours complement the chocolate topping.
